President Bola Tinubu has ordered free healthcare for low-income retirees and an urgent resolution to police pension issues, calling them matters of dignity and protection.

President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of free healthcare for low-income retirees under Nigeria’s Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), describing the move as vital to restoring dignity and ensuring social protection.

According to a statement by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu issued the directive after a detailed briefing from PenCom DG Omolola Oloworaran.

“He also called for the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee, which would provide a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners,” the statement read.

The President also mandated PenCom to urgently resolve the long-running police pension issue, saying: “Members of the Police Force who serve and protect the nation deserve to retire with dignity and peace of mind.”

The briefing included plans to introduce foreign currency pension contributions for Nigerians abroad, and efforts to preserve pension value amid inflation.

Experts and pensioners have repeatedly called for reforms to Nigeria’s pension system, which many see as inadequate.
