Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has raised the alarm over a criminal syndicate allegedly cloning his voice to defraud Nigerians.
“From information available to the office, the fraudsters cloned the voice of the SGF, using it to solicit money in return for federal appointments,” Akume said in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga.
He said the scammers also clone phone numbers of high-profile individuals and request payment from unsuspecting victims, claiming they’ve been selected for federal appointments.
“The warning becomes necessary as the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has been inundated with enquiries,” the statement added.
Odunuga revealed that victims were asked to send CVs and pay N5m to N15m to bank accounts operated by both traditional banks and fintech platforms.
Akume emphasized that appointments are “transparent and verifiable,” and urged Nigerians to report such fraud.
