CANBERRA — Australia’s foreign minister, Penny Wong, has urged Israel to abandon plans to occupy Gaza City, warning the move could amount to a breach of international law.
The call came after Israel’s security cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal for the Israel Defense Forces to take control of Gaza City, displacing tens of thousands of Palestinians.
“Permanent forced displacement is a violation of international law,” Wong said, warning the step would worsen the humanitarian crisis.
Netanyahu told Fox News Israel intended to secure Gaza, remove Hamas, and later hand control to Arab forces. His office said priorities include demilitarising Gaza and establishing an alternative administration excluding both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.
Wong reiterated Australia’s call for a ceasefire, return of hostages, and unimpeded aid. “A two-state solution is the only pathway to secure an enduring peace,” she said.
The Greens’ David Shoebridge called for sanctions on Israeli leaders, while Opposition foreign affairs spokesperson Michaelia Cash maintained Israel’s tactics were its own decision, calling for Hamas to surrender.
International law experts warn such an occupation could complicate global efforts to recognise a Palestinian state.
