Human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has regained freedom two days after being detained at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Sowore was arrested on Wednesday after honouring an invitation from the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Unit. His release was announced on Friday evening through a post on his official Facebook page.
Describing his detention as “illegal and unjust,” Sowore wrote: “The Nigeria Police Force has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, illegal and unwarranted detention. However, it is nothing to celebrate, but thank you for not giving up!”
The activist’s release followed protests staged earlier in the day by his supporters across at least five states, demanding his immediate freedom.
Sowore, a prominent critic of government policies, has faced multiple arrests in recent years over his activism. He maintained that his latest detention was a violation of his rights and vowed to continue advocating for democratic reforms.
