Nigeria’s 9mobile has officially rebranded as T2, unveiling plans to become a fully digital-first telecom operator with a focus on innovation and customer experience.

Speaking at the Lagos launch on Friday, Chief Executive Officer Obafemi Banigbe described the move as “a strategic overhaul” aimed at aligning with the future of telecommunications. “We are no longer who we were; we are becoming something greater, more ambitious, and more in tune with the future,” he said.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, joined industry stakeholders at the event. T2’s strategy includes deploying cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics to deliver faster, more personalised services, particularly for Nigeria’s expanding community of startups, creatives, and remote workers.

Banigbe acknowledged past difficulties, calling them “reminders, not defeats,” and pledged to put customer experience at the heart of operations.

The rebrand follows a July national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, allowing T2 customers to use MTN’s network nationwide, improving coverage in underserved areas.

Founded as Etisalat Nigeria in 2008, the company became 9mobile in 2017 after financial troubles and ownership changes.

Banigbe dedicated the transformation to “every Nigerian dreaming of something better,” urging the nation to “reimagine, rebuild and relaunch.”
