A grandmother in Merseyside has been banned from driving for three years after being caught over the cannabis limit while heading to collect her daughter from school.

Samantha Eaton, 34, was stopped during a routine police check in Bebington, Wirral, last September. Tests showed she was almost one-and-a-half times over the legal THC limit. A private test paid for by her father confirmed she exceeded the 2mg threshold.

Prosecutor Lynne Sayers told Sefton Magistrates’ Court: “She co-operated with the officer and provided a positive reading for a drug saliva test. She was taken to custody where she provided a blood sample which was over the limit.”

Eaton, who has previous convictions including drink-driving and drug possession, admitted drug driving. She told the court she began using cannabis to help her sleep after a petrol bomb attack on her home linked to her ex-partner.

Judge Timothy Boswell said: “Cannabis is an illegal drug and can cause a lot of damage… if you take it that is the risk you run.” Eaton was also fined £160 plus £264 in costs.
