ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi said that three former governors in the coalition had been invited by the EFCC, describing the move as an attempt to intimidate opposition leaders.
Panic has gripped the African Democratic Congress as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission allegedly targets key members of the 2027 opposition coalition seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
On Monday, the EFCC interrogated former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals totalling N189bn. Tambuwal, who governed Sokoto from 2015 to 2023, arrived at the commission’s Abuja headquarters at 11:30am and was questioned by investigators.
An EFCC source said, “The withdrawals are in flagrant violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.” Another official confirmed he remained in custody as investigations continued.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, told The PUNCH that three former governors in the coalition had been invited by the EFCC, describing the move as an attempt to intimidate opposition leaders. “Some left office in 2023, and some even earlier than that. This is an attempt to force them to leave the coalition,” he alleged.
The ADC accused the EFCC of selective prosecution, claiming old cases were being revived against opposition members while probes into ruling APC allies were abandoned.
The EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, dismissed the claims as “untenable and ridiculous,” insisting the agency was non-partisan.
Multiple sources in the coalition said the development had heightened fears among members.
Meanwhile, internal disputes and high-profile defections have deepened the coalition’s woes, with former governors Akinwunmi Ambode, Kayode Fayemi, and ex-SGF Boss Mustapha reaffirming loyalty to the APC.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has also delayed formalising his ADC membership amid speculation over former President Goodluck Jonathan’s political plans.
Factional ADC Chairman Nafiu Bala pledged to strengthen internal democracy, urging unity and strategic partnerships to bolster the party ahead of 2027.
This latest probe threatens to further fracture the opposition coalition ahead of a critical election cycle.
