Isak refuses to play for Newcastle despite club’s refusal to sell

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak is unlikely to feature against Aston Villa on Saturday amid uncertainty over his future.

The 25-year-old Sweden international has not played in pre-season as Liverpool continue their pursuit, despite Newcastle insisting they do not intend to sell.

Sources told The Athletic that Isak is “adamant” he will never play for the club again, even if a transfer fails to materialise before the window closes. He reportedly informed Eddie Howe last season that 2023-24 would be his final campaign at St James’ Park, following the club’s decision not to offer a new contract due to financial regulations.

Liverpool’s £110m bid in early August was rejected, but Newcastle may reconsider if an offer approaches £150m and a suitable replacement is secured.

Isak, who helped Newcastle win the Carabao Cup and secure Champions League qualification last season, is said to be focused on a move to Anfield.
