“Working with ICPC will make enforcement stronger, especially where data breaches are linked to corrupt practices,” NDPC chief said.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have pledged to strengthen collaboration to protect citizens’ data and combat corruption.

The agreement, anchored on the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, was reached on Monday in Abuja during an NDPC courtesy visit to ICPC headquarters.

ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, represented by Secretary Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu, said data protection would enhance anti-corruption efforts. “When these standards are met, opportunities for corruption and abuse of information shrink dramatically,” he stated.

NDPC CEO Dr. Vincent Olatunji called the partnership “a critical enforcement tool,” noting that public institutions are bound by law to protect citizens’ data.

The cooperation will include intelligence sharing, public awareness campaigns, and standardised data protocols for public and private sectors.

An MoU will be signed in the coming weeks to formalise the partnership.
