Displaced residents of Kirawa in Borno say they now spend the day in Nigeria and sleep in Cameroon to avoid night attacks.
Thousands of residents of Kirawa in Borno State have fled to neighbouring Cameroon following a Boko Haram attack on Saturday that forced the withdrawal of Nigerian troops.
Displaced victims told PUNCH Online on Tuesday that they now spend the day in Nigeria but sleep in Cameroon at night due to fear of renewed assaults.
“We can no longer sleep with our two eyes closed… sleeping in Cameroon at night and returning to spend the day,” said district head Abdulrahman Abubakar, who urged immediate government intervention.
Buba Aji, another resident, described the situation as “disturbing and inhumane,” noting that many sleep on roads, in mosques and classrooms. “No Nigerian soldier is in our community currently… we need the government to hear our plea,” he added.
Atahiru Lawan said up to 90 per cent of residents are now in Cameroon without shelter or aid. The attack reportedly killed soldiers and abducted a schoolgirl.
