China is battling its largest outbreak of Chikungunya virus, with more than 10,000 cases reported and Covid-style quarantines imposed in affected areas.

Authorities confirmed 1,387 new cases last week, mostly in Foshan, where pandemic-era restrictions have returned. Infections have also been reported in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Europe, and among travellers to the US.

Horror images released by local authorities show patients with blotchy red rashes caused by the mosquito-borne illness, which also triggers high fever and severe joint pain. “Chikungunya fever is an acute infectious disease transmitted by the Aedes mosquito and has no specific cure,” a warning stated.

Patients are being isolated until they test negative or complete a week-long stay. Measures include fines for failing to remove standing water, widespread insecticide spraying, mosquito nets, coils, and drones deploying “killer fish” and “cannibal” mosquitoes.

Chinese officials report no deaths or severe cases but urge united action to “stop the spread of the virus.” The UK Health Security Agency has warned travellers after confirming cases in the UK, while US health officials say the disease is “one plane ride” away from reaching American shores.
