The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, a day after detaining him over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals totalling N189 billion. The former governor, now Senator representing Sokoto South, regained freedom on Tuesday after meeting his bail conditions.

Tambuwal, who also served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, had honoured an EFCC invitation on Monday, arriving at the commission’s Abuja headquarters around 11:30 a.m. He was interrogated and detained overnight. EFCC sources alleged the withdrawals violated the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, describing them as “in flagrant violation” of the law.

A source confirmed, “He has been granted administrative bail. He met the bail conditions and has been released.” Efforts to reach EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale were unsuccessful.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the detention, alleging political persecution and accusing the Tinubu administration of seeking to “harass, intimidate, and decimate the opposition.”
