“If you get admission into any tertiary institution, you can apply to NELFUND; and you don’t even have to know anybody,” Minister of Information Mohammed Idris says.

The Federal Government has approved over N86 billion for the payment of tuition and upkeep of more than 400,000 students nationwide, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said. Idris made this known on Friday during a courtesy visit to Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State in Abakaliki.

He said the funds were disbursed under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) programme, designed to ensure no qualified student is denied tertiary education due to financial constraints.

“What the President seems to say is that he dislikes the situation where students… were not able to [attend school] because their parents or guardians are unable to pay for their fees or upkeep,” Idris noted. He added that beneficiaries include students from Ebonyi and other South-East states.

The minister also commended Nwifiru for providing office space for the Nigerian Press Council. Idris was accompanied by presidential advisers, heads of federal media agencies, and professional association leaders.
