Eyewitnesses told Platform Times that unidentified gunmen stormed parts of the two towns and fired shots into the air, causing confusion among residents and early voters despite the presence of security personnel
Panic broke out in Isara and Ode-Remo communities of Sagamu Local Government Area, Ogun State, on Saturday morning following sporadic gunshots ahead of the by-election in Remo Federal Constituency.
The election, holding across Sagamu, Ikenne, and Remo North LGAs, was necessitated by the death of former House of Representatives member, Adewunmi Onanuga. Eyewitnesses told Platform Times that unidentified gunmen stormed parts of the two towns and fired shots into the air, causing confusion among residents and early voters despite the presence of security personnel.
As of press time, no casualties had been reported, but the incident raised fears over possible electoral violence and the safety of voters.
The Ogun State Police Command had earlier announced a restriction of movement from midnight to 4 p.m., warning against electoral malpractice. Security operatives were seen intensifying patrols in the affected areas to restore calm and ensure smooth conduct of the election.
