ABUJA — The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has reacted to allegations of sexual abuse and non-payment of salaries made by 12 Nigerian workers recently rescued from the Central African Republic (CAR).

In a statement on Saturday, a Chinese official said the Embassy had “attached great importance” to the matter and would commence an immediate investigation. “We will immediately commence an investigation.

Before the investigation results are released, we request that the information not be disseminated or cited,” the Embassy noted, stressing that Chinese citizens abroad are expected to obey host country laws.

The reaction follows disturbing accounts by the Nigerian workers, who returned home last week after alleging starvation, abuse, and exploitation at Chinese-run mining sites in CAR.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), which received the victims in Abuja, vowed to pursue justice on their behalf. The Embassy said further actions would depend on the outcome of its investigation.
