President Trump on Monday pledged to lead a “movement” to eliminate mail-in ballots and certain voting machines, calling them unreliable and a “scam.” He said elections should rely on paper ballots with watermarks to ensure integrity.

In a Truth Social post, Mr. Trump wrote the effort would begin with an executive order to restore “honesty” to the 2026 midterms. “Remember, the States are merely an ’agent’ for the Federal Government in counting and tabulating the votes,” he said. “They must do what the Federal Government, as represented by the President of the United States, tells them, FOR THE GOOD OF OUR COUNTRY, to do.”

Mr. Trump added, “I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we’re at it, Highly ’Inaccurate,’ Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES.”

The ACLU vowed to oppose any such move, saying mail-in voting ensures access for people with disabilities and others. “President Trump’s attempts to undermine a safe, proven, and reliable method of voting…are just another part of his strategy to sow distrust,” said Sophia Lin Lakin of the ACLU.

Critics argue the Constitution leaves election administration to states. “All who support our republican constitution should aim to defend its design against usurpation,” said Walter Olson of the Cato Institute.
