The Federal Government has vowed to respond with equal measures to new U.S. visa rules mandating Nigerian applicants to disclose social media activity spanning five years.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria announced on Monday via its X handle that failure to comply could result in visa denial or ineligibility for future entry. The policy requires applicants to provide usernames, email addresses, and phone numbers linked to their social media accounts.

Explaining the move, the Mission said it was part of ongoing efforts to safeguard U.S. national security. It added that omitting social media details would be treated as false information.

Reacting, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said Nigeria would adopt reciprocal action. “Some people from the U.S. might want to apply for a visa, and we will adopt the same measures,” he said.

He added that an inter-agency meeting involving key security and immigration stakeholders would be convened to determine Nigeria’s official response.
