Police in Anambra have confirmed the assault of a corps member by vigilantes but say investigations are slowed as the victim has yet to appear.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the assault on National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Jennifer Elobor by members of a local vigilante outfit, but said the ongoing probe has been hampered by her unavailability.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command described the incident—captured in a viral video showing Elobor being beaten and stripped—as “unacceptable.” The footage revealed armed vigilantes storming a corps members’ lodge, accusing the occupants of internet fraud despite their NYSC identification, before repeatedly assaulting Elobor and tearing her clothes.
“The Command notes that the alleged victim’s unavailability has temporarily stalled the ongoing investigative process,” the statement read.
Ikenga confirmed that the suspects had been identified and arrested, stressing that assault in any form remains a criminal offence. The Command reassured corps members of their safety, warning vigilantes and other security groups that misconduct and abuse of authority would not be tolerated.
