INEC has declared Bright Ngene of the Labour Party winner of the Enugu South Urban rerun despite his ongoing prison sentence.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Labour Party (LP) candidate, Bright Ngene, as the winner of the Enugu South Urban Constituency rerun election, despite serving a seven-year jail term.

INEC spokesperson, Sam Olumekun, announced the result in a statement on Tuesday, confirming Ngene’s victory over his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival, Sam Ngene.

The rerun, held on 16 August 2025, was the fourth attempt following repeated cancellations and disruptions since a tribunal nullified the 2023 poll in eight polling units.

“Declaration and return were made by the returning officers. For the Enugu South 1 State Constituency, Ngene Bright Emeka of the Labour Party was declared the winner,” Olumekun stated.

Ngene is currently serving time in Enugu Correctional Centre after being convicted in July 2024 over a communal crisis. His conviction, which followed his earlier victories, has been described by observers as politically motivated.

INEC said Certificates of Return will be presented on 21 and 22 August.
