Trump says he may extend TikTok sale deadline after joining the app

Trump suggested he could again extend TikTok’s U.S. sale deadline, saying buyers are lined up despite criticism over security concerns.

President Donald Trump said Friday he may extend the deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok’s U.S. assets, days after the White House launched its own account on the platform.

Speaking to reporters, Trump confirmed U.S. buyers are interested in acquiring the app but declined to name them. “We have very substantial American buyers that want to buy it,” he said. The current deadline is September 17, following a law passed in 2024 requiring ByteDance to divest or halt U.S. operations.

Trump dismissed bipartisan concerns over Chinese influence, saying, “I’m really not. I think it’s highly overrated … I’m a fan of TikTok.” He added he had not yet discussed the matter with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Some lawmakers criticized the repeated extensions, accusing the administration of ignoring national security risks.
