A 16-year-old girl’s joy over her SSCE results ended in tragedy when floodwaters swept her away in Zaria.
A 16-year-old girl, Praise Malachi, drowned in a flood in Samaru, Zaria, while rushing home to check her SSCE results.
Praise, a final-year student of Government Day Secondary School, had been awarded a scholarship by the Centre for Girls Education due to her academic excellence.
Her father, Emmanuel Malachi, said, “It was around 6 pm after rainfall when her friends told her the results were out and she performed excellently well. While hurrying home to check them, she slipped into a flooded erosion site and was swept away.”
Her body was later found in Hunkuyi, Kudan LGA.
Habiba Mohammed, Director of the Centre, said, “She was one of our best students. We appeal to authorities to fix the erosion problem and construct a bridge to prevent further loss.”
Zaria has recently witnessed severe flooding, displacing residents and damaging infrastructure, with environmental experts warning of worsening erosion if unaddressed.
