The African Democratic Congress is grappling with internal uncertainty as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi delay formal membership, raising concerns about the coalition’s momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) faces mounting uncertainty as the anticipated membership of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi remains pending.

Multiple sources within the coalition told Sunday PUNCH that the refusal of Atiku, Obi, and other key figures to formally join the party has slowed its momentum. They cited unresolved legal disputes, financial challenges, and the Independent National Electoral Commission’s delay in recognising Senator David Mark’s leadership as additional setbacks.

One party insider revealed, “Members of the NWC are seriously worried that Atiku and Obi are yet to join. This is affecting the momentum the party is supposed to gather.”

However, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, dismissed the concerns, insisting, “We are not disturbed over Atiku and Obi’s delayed membership. Nothing has changed; both of them are very much with the coalition.”

Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, also affirmed his principal’s commitment, saying, “About His Excellency’s membership, he will do that at the right time. It’s a process, and it is ongoing.”

Meanwhile, Obi has yet to comment, fueling further speculation about the coalition’s future direction.
