SERAP has given President Bola Tinubu seven days to block the proposed pay rise for political office holders, warning it will take legal action if the decision is not reversed

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Bola Tinubu to stop the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) from implementing a planned pay rise for political office holders, including the president, vice president, governors, and lawmakers.

In a letter dated August 23 and signed by deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP described the proposal as “unlawful” and inconsistent with economic realities. The group urged Tinubu to “reject the imminent pay rise for politicians and encourage your vice-president, governors and their deputies, and lawmakers to do the same.”

It also called on the Attorney General, Lateef Fagbemi, to enforce a 2021 Federal High Court judgment directing RMAFC to reduce lawmakers’ salaries. SERAP argued the commission lacked “unrestrained powers” to increase pay when “over 133 million Nigerians are poor and several state governments are failing to pay salaries.”

The group warned it would seek legal redress if its demands are not met within seven days.
