Surge in Americans seeking refugee status in Canada under Trump

Record numbers of Americans are applying for refugee status in Canada amid President Trump’s controversial policies.

Canada has reported a sharp rise in the number of Americans applying for refugee status since President Donald Trump returned to office in January, new data from Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board reveals.

According to figures released Thursday, 245 Americans sought asylum in the first half of 2025—more than in all of 2024. Although the total remains a small fraction of Canada’s roughly 55,000 refugee claims, lawyers say it reflects growing concern over Trump’s immigration stance and restrictions on LGBTQ+ rights.

Eight immigration lawyers told Reuters they are receiving more inquiries from transgender Americans, including families seeking protection for their children. One trans woman from Arizona said she applied in Canada on behalf of her daughter.

Trump’s administration, with backing from the U.S. Supreme Court, has rolled back several protections for transgender people, including access to gender-affirming care, military service, bathrooms, and sports participation.

To be granted asylum, Americans must prove to Canada’s Refugee Board that no part of the United States is safe for them.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told CTV News that refugee claims in Canada should be reserved for individuals “facing actual fear and persecution.”
