A 27-year-old woman, Aisha Maikudi Ibrahim, died after her car plunged into the Lagos Lagoon, with her family condemning rescue delays and the demand for money before recovery.
A 27-year-old woman, Aisha Maikudi Ibrahim, has died after her vehicle reportedly somersaulted and plunged into the Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge.
Family sources said Ibrahim, who lived in Gbagada, was returning from an event in Ikoyi when the accident occurred. “She called her mother at about 1 a.m., assuring her she would be home in 20 minutes,” her aunt, Hadiza Oyewumi, told journalists. “By 2 a.m., her line was unreachable.”
According to Oyewumi, emergency responders failed to act. “Officials from LASTMA and the marine police kept making calls but made no attempt to go into the water,” she said. The family eventually paid local divers N400,000 before her body was recovered almost 12 hours later.
In a statement, Oyewumi described Ibrahim as “a bright and ambitious entrepreneur” but condemned the “commercialisation of human lives.” She urged the Lagos State Government to improve emergency response and ensure “preparedness and compassion” guide rescue operations.
