The Federal Government on Thursday defended its decision to raise Nigerian passport fees to N100,000 and N200,000, saying the hike is necessary to sustain quality, curb corruption, and ensure timely delivery.
In a statement, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced that from September 1, 2025, a 32-page, five-year passport will cost N100,000 while a 64-page, 10-year booklet will cost N200,000. Fees for Nigerians abroad remain $150 and $230 respectively.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the new rates would eliminate delays and extortion. “Our target is very clear: within one week of enrolment, every Nigerian should have their passport in hand,” he said in Abuja. He noted that past corruption allowed citizens to be charged up to N200,000 to fast-track processing.
The minister highlighted reforms including a centralised personalisation centre—Africa’s largest—capable of printing five times national demand. He also announced that Passport Control Officers will no longer approve applications, curbing abuse of power.
“Our passport must remain a true symbol of Nigerian identity,” Tunji-Ojo stressed, recalling cases where foreigners illegally obtained Nigerian passports.
