Peter Obi has faulted the Tinubu administration for raising passport fees above Nigeria’s minimum wage, describing the policy as burdensome and disconnected from citizens’ struggles.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government’s decision to raise Nigerian passport fees, arguing that the cost has now surpassed the national minimum wage. Obi, in a post on X Thursday night, said the N100,000 fee for a 32-page booklet and N200,000 for a 64-page booklet represented the third increase in two years.

“The International Passport fees in Nigeria have now skyrocketed to ₦100,000 for a 32-page booklet and ₦200,000 for 64 pages. This is the third increase in just two years,” Obi wrote. He lamented that the fee now exceeds the new minimum wage of ₦70,000, describing Nigeria as “probably the only country in the world to achieve this feat.”

Obi further accused the Tinubu administration of worsening economic hardship. “The obsession of this administration with putting a burden on the populace is becoming legendary,” he stated, urging the government to reverse the hike.
