The Lagos NLC has urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to raise the state minimum wage to N150,000, citing rising living costs.
LAGOS – The Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to raise the minimum wage for state workers from N85,000 to N150,000, citing the high cost of living in the state.
The chairperson of NLC in Lagos, Funmi Sesi, made the demand on Thursday in reaction to recent wage increases by the Imo and Ebonyi state governments. She argued that the economic realities in Lagos, particularly the cost of housing, transport, feeding, and utilities, warranted an upward review.
“The time has come for an upward review of minimum wage in Lagos. At least someone has taken the bull by the horns and opened the space,” Ms Sesi said.
She added that workers in Lagos deserved wages and conditions “commensurate with the economic realities in the country,” expressing optimism that other states would follow the examples of Imo and Ebonyi.
