A new DNA study showing one in four Nigerian children fail paternity tests has triggered fierce debate over family trust, culture, and the necessity of testing

A new study by Smart DNA Nigeria has reignited national debate after revealing that 25 percent of paternity tests conducted between July 2024 and June 2025 returned negative. The report found firstborns, particularly sons, were most likely to be excluded, raising questions about trust, family stability and cultural attitudes toward fidelity. Lagos accounted for 69 percent of cases, with Yoruba clients making up 53 percent. Men initiated 88.2 percent of tests, mostly those aged 41 and above, while most children tested were under five.

The findings have divided opinion. Clinical psychologist Dr. Dipo Olawale cautioned, “A man should not just subject his children to a DNA test… it will only cause you emotional and psychological trauma.” Conversely, Chief Wole Adegbola argued, “It is always very important to know early… to avoid psychological and emotional torture.”

The report urged legal reforms, better public education, and sensitivity in handling outcomes.
