The withdrawal of U.S. aid in northeast Nigeria has forced a school for Boko Haram’s child victims to cut hundreds of students and teachers, worsening the region’s education crisis.

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — The loss of U.S. aid in northeast Nigeria has endangered the future of a school that provides critical support for children affected by Boko Haram’s violence.

The extremist group, which has waged a bloody insurgency since 2009 and opposes Western-style education, gained worldwide infamy after abducting hundreds of Chibok schoolgirls in 2014.

Now, the Associated Press reports that the withdrawal of U.S. funding has forced the school to dismiss as many as 700 students and 20 teachers, raising fears that vulnerable children in the conflict-scarred region could once again be left without access to education.
