Ruth Otabor, sister of BBNaija star Phyna, has died from accident injuries, raising questions over delayed care and systemic failures.

Ruth Otabor, sister to Big Brother Naija star Phyna, has died from injuries sustained in a road accident at Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, sparking grief and public outrage.

The young mother and recent graduate was critically injured on August 13 when a Dangote truck was involved in a crash that left her amputated. Despite hopes for her recovery, she passed away on Sunday morning at 6:30 a.m.

Phyna, known for her outspoken advocacy, had demanded justice from the Dangote Group and called for her sister’s transfer abroad for specialist treatment. “Anytime you remember Ruth, please say a prayer for her,” she had pleaded in a post on X.

The Dangote Group pledged support on August 16, stating: “We are ensuring full support for Mrs. Otabor, including comprehensive medical care and appropriate compensation.” Talks for treatment in India never materialized before her death.

Condolences poured in from celebrities, fans, and colleagues, including Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw, who said, “May God comfort your family at this difficult time.”

However, Ruth’s death has stirred wider debate. Activist Omoyele Sowore said, “This death was not inevitable; it could have been avoided if drivers were properly trained, if Nigeria’s terrible roads were fixed, and if there had been timely, humane medical intervention.”

For many, Ruth’s passing has become more than a family tragedy it symbolizes systemic failures in road safety and healthcare that often deny Nigerians a fair chance at survival.
