Liverpool have agreed a British-record £125m deal with Newcastle United to sign striker Alexander Isak, who will undergo a medical ahead of a move to Anfield.
Liverpool have agreed to sign Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak in a deal worth £125m, breaking the British transfer record. The 25-year-old forward will undergo a medical ahead of completing a six-year contract at Anfield on deadline day.
The agreement eclipses the Reds’ previous record signing of Florian Wirtz for £116m earlier this summer. Talks between the two clubs were reopened over the weekend, with a breakthrough reached late on Sunday evening.
Isak, who was Newcastle’s star forward last season, had been pushing for a move and even trained away from the first team amid transfer tensions. “I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,” he wrote in August. “When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue.”
Newcastle had initially demanded £150m for the Swedish striker but settled on £125m after securing a replacement in Germany’s Nick Woltemade. Manager Eddie Howe’s side had earlier rebuffed Liverpool’s £110m offer.
Isak is expected to take the vacant No.9 shirt at Liverpool, previously worn by Darwin Núñez before his exit in July. He could make his debut in Sweden’s World Cup qualifier against Slovenia on September 5 before joining Arne Slot’s squad.
The record-breaking deal ends a summer-long saga and strengthens Liverpool’s attack following the departures of Núñez and Luis Díaz.
