US tightens rules as visa crackdown on travellers increases

Nigerian travellers to the United States are increasingly experiencing sudden visa cancellations and tighter restrictions, raising fears of strained bilateral ties. The development has been linked to stricter immigration policies under President Donald Trump’s administration.

A source familiar with the matter told BusinessDay that his colleague had his U.S. visa revoked just before a scheduled trip. “One of my colleagues had his visa cancelled when he wanted to travel. I was only lucky when I travelled to the U.S. three weeks ago. Since Trump’s return, a lot of people have been having issues with travelling to the U.S.,” he said.

The source added that student visa applications have been stalled, with many either denied or left in limbo without feedback. He also noted that individuals whose activities are deemed critical of the U.S. government have had their visas abruptly withdrawn.

The development has disrupted plans for Nigerians seeking education, medical treatment, and business engagements in the U.S., with the American Embassy in Nigeria yet to issue an official response.
