A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration violated the law by using National Guard troops during LA immigration operations and protests.

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that former President Donald Trump’s administration violated federal law by deploying National Guard troops during immigration enforcement operations and protests in Los Angeles.

Judge Charles Breyer said the move breached the Posse Comitatus Act, which bars military involvement in domestic law enforcement. His order, effective Friday, does not require immediate troop withdrawal.

California sued, arguing the deployment defied legal limits. Trump federalized California’s Guard despite objections from Governor Gavin Newsom and local leaders. The troops joined operations targeting undocumented immigrants and protesters, and even accompanied federal officers on raids, testimony revealed.

Breyer wrote that officials “willfully” broke the law, using soldiers for prohibited tasks like traffic control and crowd management. He criticized the administration for “coaching” agencies to mask violations.

Newsom posted on X: “DONALD TRUMP LOSES AGAIN. The courts agree — his militarization of our streets and use of the military against US citizens is ILLEGAL.”

The White House has not commented.
