A new report has revealed that 80 million Nigerian youths are unemployed, while insecurity forced the closure of 1,500 schools in two years.

A report by Plan International Nigeria has revealed that nearly 80 million Nigerian youths are unemployed, while over 1,500 schools have been shut in the past two years due to insecurity, leaving one million children out of school.

Presented in Abuja on Thursday, the State of the Nigerian Youth Report 2025 paints a grim picture for a country where over 60 percent of the population is under 30. “This is not just a statistic. It represents shattered dreams and wasted talent,” said Jonathan Abakpa, Advocacy and Youth Programme Officer.

The report, launched during the Nigerian Youth Dialogue to mark International Youth Day, warns that unemployment, poverty, and insecurity threaten Nigeria’s future. It disclosed that 1.7 million graduates enter the job market yearly, with few opportunities available.

Chairman of the House Committee on Youth in Parliament, Hon. Ayodeji Alao-Akala, pledged to push youth-friendly policies, saying, “They are the future of Nigeria, and we must harness their potential for development.”
