NUPENG vows to halt fuel loading Monday over Dangote refinery’s plan to deploy 4,000 CNG trucks.

Tanker drivers under the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) have threatened to halt fuel loading from Monday over an alleged anti-labour stance by the Dangote Refinery.

The dispute stems from the refinery’s plan to deploy 4,000 compressed natural gas-powered trucks for direct fuel distribution. NUPENG, in a statement signed by its President, Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, said Dangote’s refusal to allow union membership for the new drivers violates labour rights.

“To our utmost shock, drivers being recruited are being forced to sign an undertaking not to belong to any existing union,” the statement read.

The union accused Dangote of trying to “monopolise distribution, crush competition, enslave the sector, and raise prices.”

NUPENG warned that failure to address its concerns would lead to a nationwide shutdown of fuel loading, which could trigger scarcity.

Dangote Refinery has yet to respond to the allegations.
