Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s political camp is split over his potential 2027 presidential run as PDP zoning tensions and shifting regional loyalties pose challenges.
Indications have emerged that former President Goodluck Jonathan is weighing a return to the 2027 presidential race, with his associates divided on the matter. Sources at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat confirmed ongoing consultations to woo him back into partisan politics. Northern elements reportedly see him as a compromise candidate who could pave the way for one of their own in 2031.
Observers point to recent remarks by Jonathan, his cousin Robert Azibaola, and aide Ikechukwu Eze as signs of renewed ambition. Jonathan’s speech at Chief Mike Ogiadomhe’s 70th birthday, where he lamented betrayal in 2015, was described by allies as strategic. “If Jonathan was not interested in the race, it would cost him nothing to make a categorical statement to that effect,” one associate said.
However, PDP micro-zoning has complicated matters, while shifting loyalties in the Southsouth and South East further weaken his base. Party insiders warn that Jonathan’s path to securing the ticket is far from assured.
