The Federal Government has called Dangote and NUPENG to an emergency meeting to prevent a nationwide strike that could paralyze the economy.

The Federal Government has summoned the Dangote Group and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to an emergency meeting scheduled for Monday, September 8, in a bid to avert a nationwide strike. The intervention, announced by the Minister of Labour and Employment, follows NUPENG’s threat to commence an indefinite strike over alleged anti-union practices and other grievances.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has endorsed the planned action and directed its 54 affiliates and 36 state councils to prepare for full participation. The unions insist the strike is not only about workplace rights but also about the survival of the labour movement and the dignity of Nigerian workers.

Analysts warn that the industrial action could trigger severe fuel shortages, disrupt economic activities, and heighten social tension if the dispute is not resolved. The meeting will determine whether the government, employers, and labour can reach common ground to prevent a major national shutdown.
