Flight Disruptions: FG orders clampdown on airlines frustrating passengers

The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to name and shame airlines that disrupt flights without justifiable reasons. The directive, which takes immediate effect, is aimed at ensuring improved compliance with aviation regulations and better treatment of passengers.

Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, Mr. Michael Achimugu, disclosed the move in a statement on X. He cautioned that incidents where airline staff abandon stranded passengers, leaving NCAA officers to manage angry customers, would no longer be condoned. “While one understands the challenges that operators face in our peculiar operating environment, whoever ventures into this business must do it well,” Achimugu said.

He emphasized that NCAA officials must not be exposed to unnecessary risks while safeguarding passenger rights. “For infractions that are sanctionable, the authority will apply the fullest measures possible,” he warned.

According to Achimugu, the crackdown follows directives from the Federal Government and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, adding that “the naming and shaming” of erring airlines will begin immediately.
