LeBron James praised China in a People’s Daily op-ed, sparking renewed criticism over his stance on human rights.
NBA superstar LeBron James has praised his long-standing ties with China in an op-ed for the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party.
In the column, titled Basketball Is a Bridge That Connects Us All, James reflected on his 15 trips to China over his 22-year NBA career and the warm reception he has received. “I am deeply moved by the passion and friendliness of my Chinese friends, and I can only express my gratitude by giving my best in every game,” he wrote. The four-time NBA champion, preparing for his 23rd season, encouraged young players to practice with “determination, dedication and passion.”
The essay reignited criticism in the U.S., where James has previously faced backlash for defending the NBA’s China interests. In 2019, he said then-Rockets executive Daryl Morey “wasn’t educated” after supporting Hong Kong protesters. Hudson Institute analyst Michael Sobolik said James’ new remarks again highlight his silence on issues like Uyghurs and Tibet.
