One dead, mother and baby swept away in Zaria flood

A flood in Tudun Jukun, Zaria, swept away four people, with one body recovered and three others still missing, according to eyewitnesses.

At least four persons were swept away by floodwaters in Tudun Jukun, Zaria, Kaduna State, following heavy rainfall on Tuesday.

An eyewitness, Mustapha Badamasi, said the incident occurred along Gaskiya road near a church where water overflowed a large drainage by the roadside. “The unfortunate incident occurred on the main Gaskiya road near a church in Tudun Jukun where water submerged the big drainage by the roadside,” he said.

According to him, a motorcyclist carrying a woman and her three-year-old child lost control and hit the edge of the drainage. “The woman quickly jumped from the bike and while attempting to cross the drainage by foot she slipped and fell along with the baby on her back and were instantly swept away by the speeding water. Similarly, the motorcyclist was also flooded away by the water,” he added.

The corpse of Yusuf Surajo, also known as Abba, was recovered, while Fatima Sani Danmarke, her baby, and the motorcyclist remain missing.

Funeral prayers were led by Imam Mallam Musa Umar Al Mishawi, who confirmed the deceased sustained a forehead injury before being buried at Kwarin Dangoma.

Efforts to reach the Zaria Zonal Coordinator of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) were unsuccessful at press time.
