Mele Kyari, the immediate past Group Managing Director of NNPCL, is being quizzed by EFCC investigators in Abuja.
The immediate past Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, is being interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja over alleged financial misconduct.
Sources within the agency confirmed to our correspondent that Kyari is currently with investigators at the EFCC headquarters. “He is here with our investigators at the moment. This is all I can confirm for now,” one of the sources said.
Kyari was invited to clarify financial transactions linked to his tenure at the state-owned oil company. The investigation reportedly centres on alleged irregularities in the management of billions of dollars meant for refinery rehabilitation projects, including the $7.2 billion turnaround maintenance scheme.
A Federal High Court in Abuja recently ordered the temporary freezing of four bank accounts linked to Kyari. He was placed on the EFCC watch list months earlier.
Kyari served as GMD from 2019 until his replacement in July 2024.
