NUPENG has placed its members on red alert, accusing the Dangote Group of reneging on a government-brokered agreement over workers’ unionisation.

The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has again placed its members on “red alert” after accusing the Dangote Group of reneging on an agreement brokered by the federal government on Tuesday.

In a statement signed by President William Akporeha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale, the union warned of a possible resumption of suspended nationwide strike action. The dispute centres on Dangote’s alleged refusal to allow unionisation of workers, despite signing a pact in the presence of the Minister of Labour and Employment and officials of the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to NUPENG, “Today, the 11th of September, he instructed them to forcefully drive into Dangote Refinery to load because their trucks violated union loading rules and regulations.”

The union also accused Sayyu Dantata of calling in the Navy against union members. NUPENG urged government to prevent security agencies from being used “against the laws and people of this country.”
