A New Jersey couple faces charges of abusing their daughter for years in a “house of horrors,” confining her in a dog crate and subjecting her to beatings and sexual assault.
Chilling new details have emerged about a New Jersey couple accused of subjecting their daughter to years of abuse in what prosecutors have called a “house of horrors.”
Brenda Spencer, 38, and Brad Moseley, 41, allegedly forced the girl to eat from a popcorn bucket, denied her bathing, shaved her head, and confined her in a dog crate, according to prosecutors. She also told investigators she was beaten with a belt and sexually abused by her stepfather. Moseley, who admitted to heavy drinking, allegedly told police he “couldn’t recall” the assaults but “said it was possible.”
The 18-year-old escaped in May with the help of a neighbor, leading to the couple’s arrest. Prosecutors said the abuse dated back to 2018, when Spencer withdrew her daughter from school under the guise of homeschooling. The girl reported being chained in a padlocked bathroom and locked in a barren room with only a bucket for a toilet.
Authorities described the home as “squalid” and “despicable,” with dogs, chinchillas, and other animals present. Her younger sister, 14, also lived there but was allegedly kept home to prevent her from revealing the abuse. Both children are now in safe locations.
Spencer faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted, while Moseley could face life. Both pleaded not guilty during arraignment. Their next court date is set for October 7.
