NSIB has confirmed Air Peace pilots were intoxicated during a Port Harcourt runway incident, prompting urgent safety recommendations.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has indicted the pilot and co-pilot of an Air Peace Boeing 737 for flying under the influence of alcohol and drugs after a runway incursion at Port Harcourt International Airport on July 13, 2025.
According to a preliminary report released Friday and signed by NSIB spokesperson Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, toxicological tests confirmed that both cockpit crew members tested positive for alcohol, while a cabin crew member tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in cannabis.
“The aircraft, operating as a scheduled domestic flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt with 103 persons on board, landed long on Runway 21 after an unstabilised final approach.
The aircraft touched down 2,264 metres from the runway threshold and came to a final stop 209 metres into the clearway,” the NSIB report stated.
Though all passengers and crew disembarked safely without injuries, investigators raised concerns over human performance in aviation safety.
The bureau said it has issued immediate safety recommendations to Air Peace, urging stricter crew resource management training, improved monitoring of flight crew fitness-for-duty, and stronger protocols to prevent intoxicated personnel from operating flights.
