A police officer arrested for suggesting a strike on a WhatsApp group has been granted bail after weeks in custody.

A Magistrate’s Court in Wuse has granted bail to a dismissed police officer, Adebiyi Adenusi, who was arrested for urging colleagues to embark on strike via a WhatsApp group.

According to Sahara Reporters, Adenusi, 48, was detained in June after commenting in the Intelligence Information Unit WhatsApp group that officers should strike to demand better welfare. Although he deleted the message, a screenshot was forwarded to senior authorities.

His counsel, Barrister Samuel Ihensekhien, argued for his release, and Magistrate Ibrahim Okpe granted bail on liberal terms.

Adenusi, who had served in the police force for 23 years, was dismissed on July 10 after being tried in an orderly room. His arrest followed circulation of a video showing a retired superintendent receiving only ₦2 million in benefits.

Eight other officers linked to the WhatsApp group were also detained. They were later released with their ranks reduced.

Family sources said Adenusi’s ordeal reflects broader frustrations within the police over welfare issues.
