The Nigerian Police Force under Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun spent ₦507.5 million in a single day renovating his Maitama guest house, awarding the contract to a company owned by a woman currently facing EFCC fraud charges.
A review of Nigeria’s public payments portal, Govspend, has revealed that the police under Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun spent ₦507.5 million on renovating his official guest house in Maitama, Abuja.
Records show the payments were made on December 7, 2023, in two tranches to Beckybliss Nigeria Limited. The first, ₦153.4 million, was described as “final payment… for extensive renovation and furnishing works of the guest house of the Inspector General of Police, Maitama.”
The second, ₦354.1 million, was also tagged as payment for the same project.
Checks by SaharaReporters indicate that Beckybliss Nigeria Limited is owned by Rebecca Omokamo Godwin, also known as Bilikisu Ishaku Aliyu, who is currently under EFCC investigation for alleged ₦500 million fraud.
In May, the Initiative Against Human Rights Abuse and Torture (INAHURAT) urged the IGP to stop shielding her from prosecution.
In July, a witness told a Federal High Court how Ms Godwin defrauded him of ₦62 million in a land transaction. She faces 17 counts of fraud and money laundering.
This is not the first time police spending under Egbetokun has raised eyebrows. Govspend records show ₦86 million was spent on Christmas decorations and ₦59.4 million on IGP-branded towels between 2023 and 2024.
