Nigerians have criticised NUPENG for describing Dangote Refinery’s fuel price cut as a “Greek gift,” with many mocking the union online.
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has come under fire after warning Nigerians against accepting Dangote Refinery’s recent petrol price reduction.
The union described the move as a “Greek gift,” alleging that Dangote was undermining workers’ rights, forcing drivers into a rival association, and sidelining the union.
But many Nigerians took to X to mock the stance, describing the price cut as a welcome relief during tough times. “We like Greek gifts in my garage,” Oloye Somorin Osifeso posted, while another user, Just Jude, asked: “Is it your deception?” Others urged NUPENG to provide its own “gifts” if it had Nigerians’ interests at heart.
Critics accused the union of failing to support citizens and protecting only its own interests. The federal government has since stepped in, with the Ministry of Labour and the DSS mediating between NUPENG and Dangote Refinery over the dispute.
