Mexico demanded an investigation after a Mexican cook was fatally shot by an ICE officer in suburban Chicago.

Mexico has called for a “rigorous investigation” into the fatal shooting of a Mexican national by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in suburban Chicago.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry confirmed the victim as 38-year-old Silverio Villegas, a cook, who was shot on Friday after allegedly attempting to flee arrest. Authorities said Villegas dragged an ICE officer with his vehicle during the stop before being fatally shot. The officer was injured but is in stable condition.

“The consulate’s staff has been in contact with the relatives of Mr. Villegas to provide the legal counsel and support they require,” the ministry wrote in an X post, reiterating its commitment to protect Mexicans abroad.

The incident risks heightening tensions between the Trump administration and Illinois’ Democratic leaders, who have long clashed over immigration enforcement. President Trump has threatened to send National Guard troops to Chicago but suggested Friday he is not immediately moving forward with the plan.
