Former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton has died at 46, prompting tributes from fans, fellow fighters, and his beloved Manchester City.
Former two-division world champion Ricky Hatton has died at the age of 46, the World Boxing Association (WBA) announced on Sunday. Nicknamed “the Hitman,” Hatton won the WBA, IBO and IBF light-welterweight titles as well as the WBA welterweight crown before retiring in 2012.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed a body was discovered at an address in Hyde on Sunday morning, adding, “The death is not being treated as suspicious.”
The WBA paid tribute, writing on Instagram: “A true champion, an indomitable spirit and a legend of the sport. Your legacy will live on in every fight and in the hearts of boxing fans around the world.”
Hatton, who had 45 wins in 48 bouts, was open about his struggles with depression, alcohol and drugs. He became an ambassador for mental health charity Campaign Against Living Miserably in 2023.
Manchester City honoured the lifelong fan with a minute’s appreciation before their derby clash with Manchester United.
